Camerata Nordica nominated for the Swedish Grammy Award 2009!

Our CD with Per Tengstrand and Levon Chilingirian playing Mozart's Piano Concertos no 15 & 17 was nominated for the Swedish Grammy Award 2009. This is our third nomination, the first one came in 2006 for the recording with music by Anders Eliasson and the second came last year for the CD with Mozart’s Piano Concertos no 11 & 14, also with Per Tengstrand and Levon Chilingirian.

Regrettably the CD did not proceed to the finale, which was held on 7 January 2009.

Wofgang Amadeus Mozart
Piano concerto no 15 [B flat major, K450]
Piano concerto no 17 [G major, K453]

Director: Levon Chilingirian
Soloist: Per Tengstrand, piano

Label: dB Productions dBCD93

Rating: 4 out of 5
”The CD offers top-class music, performed with style and lightness, and the listener realizes that it takes great musical talent to achieve this.”
Motala och Vadstena Tidning

“Two of Mozart’s best, but less played, piano-concertos in the hands of Per Tengstrand becomes something special. The multifaceted sound is present and the performance shines with musicianship.”
Helsingborgs Dagblad/Nordvästra Skånes Tidningar

Ludwig van Beethoven
The Late String Quartets - arranged for string orchestra
Op 127, 130, 131, 132, 135

Director: Terje Tønnesen
Label: Altara Music ALT 1024 (3 CD)

"Enter from Sweden the 33 year old Camerata Nordica in an astonishingly fine set of arrangements by Terje Tonnesen.
...a powerful and penetrating performance.
...This is a baroque-size ensemble of 15 or so that can be light and transparent when necessary and full of bite and drama and depth when that is called for."
American Record Guide

Rating: 4 out of 5
”In its original form Beethoven’s last five string quartets, from opus 127 to op 135, may appear introvert, and to many listeners inaccessible. Performed by a string orchestra the music feels demystified and demythified, especially when it’s played with the intensity and passion of the 16-17 musicians of Camerata Nordica, based in Oskarshamn.”
Göteborgs-Posten

Rating: 4 out of 5
”Here you find precision and concentration combined with an intensity, warmth and passion, which is so marked that it is almost tangible.”
Norran

Nominated for the Swedish Grammy Award 2008

Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart
Piano Concerto no 11 [F major, K413]
Piano Concerto no 14 [E flat major, K449]

Director:
Levon Chilingirian
Soloist: Per Tengstrand piano

Label: dB Productions dBCD71

”… which I give absolute top marks. Tengstrand plays the piano concertos 11 and 14 by Mozart in a breath-taking way. Camerata Nordica, directed by no less than Levon Chilingirian, accompany in a highly precise way.”
Falu Kuriren/Borlänge Tidning/Södra Dalarnas Tidning

”All trills and runs are crystal-clear and perfectly balanced, also every nuance, on the brink of being mechanical. An enjoyable record of highest quality.”
Nerikes Allehanda

”Camerata Nordica and Levon Chilingirian are totally coordinated fellow musicians. The small ensemble gives the right atmosphere to this lovely music.  … Per Tengstrand has a wondrous ability to find the composer’s deepest intentions. He interprets the music with brio and passion, and with a technique which emphasises the delicate as well as the virtuoso parts of the music.”

Kurt Atterberg
Sinfonia per archi
Adagio amoroso
Intermezzo
Prelude and fugue
Suite no 7

Director and soloist: Ulf Wallin

Label: cpo 777 156-2

"This is fantastically beautiful music: luscious, tuneful, evocative, but never decadent or devoid of energy and purpose. ... Most delightful of all is the Suite no 7, a string arrangement of incidental music to Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra. This is marvelous stuff, worthy of Grieg at his best, with a third-movement waltz that easily could become a pops concert favorite. The performances are uniformly excellent: well-played, passionate, and intense, doing the music full justice. ... This is a disc not to be missed, and a treat for all fans of good, warm, tuneful, big-hearted music."

Recording of the month
”Not to be missed by Swedish romantics. Beautiful coaxed and balanced dynamics, subtle and diaphanous textures contrast with resinous attack.”
Musicweb International

“… this is unfailingly gracious, appealing music. It’s all nicely played by the Swedish chamber orchestra, with Ulf Wallin doubling as conductor and violin soloist, and well recorded.”
The Dallas Morning News

”Camerata Nordica gives the music a multi-faceted interpretation. With great commitment and intensity the musicians creates wonderful sounds and delivers constantly surprising turns in the musical progression, making the listening-experience most varied. The following shorter pieces are in Camerata Nordica’s recording very worth hearing.”
Interpretation: 4 – Sound quality: 5 (out of 5)
Klassik.com

“The highlight on this CD of Atterberg's music for string orchestra is his thirty-minute "Sinfonia per archi." … It's a major addition to the chamber music cannon and when you hear it you'll wonder why you haven't encountered it before now. There's a dramatic urgency, sense of foreboding and at times a wistfulness that oddly enough may remind you of Bernard Herrmann's magnificent suite for strings that he synthesized from his legendary score for the film Psycho. … Outstandingly sympathetic performances by the Camerata Nordica (formerly the Camerata Roman/Sweden) and good sound make this disc a winner.”
Bob McQuiston (Tower Records, Washington , DC )

”The piece lasts half an hour, and you gladly listen repeatedly when the performance is as excellent as this. … None of the music is profound, but it is made with skill and always a pleasure to listen to. And as said before: brilliantly performed.”

Ein schneller Blick... ein kurzes Aufscheinen (2003)

Director and soloist: Levon Chilingirian
Label: Caprice Records CAP 21731

Ein schneller Blick - a glance, a flare. The title alludes to the spark of which music is born. Accompany Camerata Nordica into Eliasson's musical universe. Ein Schneller Blick was commissioned by the orchestra and premiered in 2003.

“There can be no doubt as to the excellence of the performance by Camerata Nordica, which makes each work sound enviably ‘played in’, or of  the authority with which Levon Chilingirian shoulders his duties as soloist and director.”
International Record Review

”Camerata Nordica emphasizes the music’s expressive element, and so does soloist Levon Chilingirian in the violin concerto. …Camerata Nordica plays with an earthy, sometimes harsh, but always expressive sound, which proves that Eliasson’s music always is of great importance.”
Dagens Nyheter, Stockholm

“The CD Camerata Nordica now presents is a good deed. …The violin concerto has the traditional three movements and offers music making of great substance. Elements of great beauty are revealed in the slow movement.”
Verdict: very good
Sydsvenska Dagbladet, Malmö

”The violin concerto, almost Russian in its heat and melancholy, is given a convincing interpretation by Camerata Nordica and Chilingirian.”
Verdict: four points (out of six)
Svenska Dagbladet , Stockholm

"...the solo line is part of the orchestral fabric. This presents its own challenges which Chilingirian, simultaneously directing the orchestra rises to with great aplomb. Riveting music, expertly presented.

They do very well by this music indeed. I enjoyed both the selections and their interpretation...”
